What is endodontics and when is it needed?

Endodontic treatment is the treatment of root canals, and endodontics is a specific field of dentistry. Such treatment is necessary when micro-organisms and their toxins enter the root canals and infect the tooth nerve and the tooth pulp, called the pulp. Inflammation of the pulp is called pulpitis. It is true that other factors or traumas can also cause pathological processes in the pulp, such as: caries that has been left untreated for a long time and has reached the deeper tissues of the tooth; a tooth that has been subjected to many dental procedures or large fillings; teeth that are constantly traumatised by gnashing or forceful biting; or a tooth that has been traumatised, which has disrupted the lymphatic and circulatory function of the nerve.

Root canals need to be treated because, if left untreated, microorganisms in the pulp penetrate above the apex of the root and cause inflammation in the surrounding tissues, which can lead to periodontitis, bone melting around the root, intense swelling, decay and other complications.

However, there are still patients who delay when they feel pain and think it will go away on its own. However, the inflammation in the root canals does not go away, but only progresses and the pain increases, so it's not worth suffering and waiting.

The next step is to open and clean the root canals, which needs to be precise, because if the canals are not properly cleaned and sealed, the problem will only get worse. The canals are thus cleaned mechanically, treated with chemicals, then shaped and sealed. However, if there is an infection in the root canal, a single visit will not be enough, in which case a therapeutic calcium paste is usually left in the canal during the first visit. In such cases, it is not recommended to chew or bite on the treated tooth until the filling has been restored.

The root canal specialist will give you detailed information on what to do and what to avoid after the procedure. However, the general recommendations are that you should not chew, let alone bite, especially harder foods, with an endodontically treated tooth until the crown is restored. The crown of a tooth that has not been fully restored is quite sensitive and more fragile and can easily break.

Once the crown has been fully restored after endodontic treatment, this tooth needs to be cared for in the same way as the other teeth: brushing twice a day; if necessary, using a single-tooth toothbrush; using interdental cleaners; etc.
