The process of dental implant placement may vary slightly depending on the implant placement method chosen. However, in general, the procedure proceeds as described below

Establishing a treatment plan

This is the initial stage, when a detailed consultation with the dentist discusses the treatment options, the prospects, the most appropriate implant treatment method for the specific case and the treatment plan. Sometimes during this visit, it becomes clear that there is not enough bone tissue for an implant and bone grafting is needed. In this case, an additional augmentation procedure is performed.

Preparing for dental implants

Your dentist will tell you how to prepare for dental implants during your consultation. However, let's mention the most important recommendations in general.

First and foremost, diligent oral care is very important, and professional dental hygiene should be performed. It is advisable to eat a full meal before the implant procedure, as you will not be able to eat immediately after the procedure, and you will still feel discomfort when chewing for several days afterwards, so you will not be able to eat everything. Women should not use cosmetic products before the procedure and men should shave their beard if possible. If your doctor has recommended that you take painkillers or antibiotics before the implantation, follow the recommendation. Smokers should refrain from smoking for a few days prior to the implantation, as smoking can affect the results of the procedure and the healing period.

Implantation

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so patients usually feel no pain or other discomfort. A minimal incision is made in the gums, the site of the lost tooth, a special drill is used to make room for the implant and advanced equipment is used to thread the implant into the jawbone. The gums are often stitched and a special healing head is attached to the implant. If necessary, a temporary crown can be placed on the implant for aesthetic reasons, and is therefore more often chosen when a front tooth is implanted.

One day after the procedure, you should start rinsing your mouth with the liquid recommended by your doctor.

The teeth on the implant will need to be cared for in the same way as natural teeth. The first step is to brush your teeth thoroughly twice a day, morning and night. The toothbrush should be replaced periodically, especially if it shows signs of wear. Clean not only your teeth, but also your tongue - be meticulous about removing plaque. Cleaning the gums is very important as they tend to accumulate food residues, which leads to a faster build-up of plaque. So when brushing your teeth, use interdental floss and alcohol-free mouthwash.
